Las Vegas Activates 22 New License Plate Scanners Around Fremont Street
Las Vegas deploys 22 new license plate-reading surveillance cameras along the Fremont Street Experience (FSE) intersections, enhancing security measures ahead of New Year's Eve celebrations. These cameras automatically scan for stolen or wanted vehicles and alert law enforcement when matches are found.
According to city officials, the cameras are strictly limited to vehicle identification and cannot be used for traffic violation enforcement, such as speeding or running red lights.
This new system adds to FSE's existing comprehensive security infrastructure, which includes:
- Over 300 video surveillance cameras monitoring the LED canopy area
- ShotPoint gunshot detection system (installed 2020)
- AI-powered smart safety platform (installed 2022) that monitors for:
- Fires
- Intrusions
- Unattended bags
- Vandalism
- Graffiti
- Fights
- Loitering
The AI system also provides crowd counting capabilities and analyzes pedestrian traffic patterns. FSE officials confirm that none of these security systems utilize facial recognition technology.
These enhanced security measures reflect ongoing efforts to ensure public safety in one of Las Vegas's most popular tourist destinations, which attracts millions of visitors annually.
