Star Gold Coast Casino Gets License Suspension Postponed Until March 2025
The Star Gold Coast casino has received a temporary reprieve as Queensland officials defer the planned 90-day gaming license suspension that was set to begin December 20, 2024. The state government will make a final decision by March 31, 2025.

Queensland Attorney General Deb Frecklington emphasized that this deferment will allow more time to evaluate The Star's remedial actions, though it doesn't guarantee avoiding suspension altogether. The postponement follows regulatory concerns about money laundering and criminal activity, similar to issues found at The Star Sydney.
The casino group's financial performance has declined significantly:
- Overall EBITDA dropped 26% to AU$174.7 million in FY2024
- Share value decreased by AU67 cents
- Property-specific performance:
- Sydney: AU$877.5 million revenue, AU$51.8 million EBITDA
- Gold Coast: AU$456.1 million revenue, AU$71.3 million EBITDA
- Brisbane: AU$344.2 million revenue, AU$51.6 million EBITDA
The company faces ongoing challenges, including the exodus of high-roller customers to other markets and increased operational costs due to stricter regulatory requirements. This follows similar regulatory actions in New South Wales, where The Star Sydney paid AU$115 million in total fines rather than face license suspension.
