The Gift Responsibly Campaign has achieved record global participation with 74 lotteries and 101 community organizations joining forces to prevent youth gambling during the 2024 holiday season. This initiative, led by the National Council on Problem Gambling (NCPG) and backed by the North American Association of State and Provincial Lotteries (NASPL), focuses on educating the public about the risks of giving lottery tickets to minors.

Research indicates that early exposure to gambling significantly increases the likelihood of developing gambling problems later in life. This often begins with lottery products given by well-meaning adults unaware of potential consequences.

During November and December, participating organizations will:

  • Educate communities about the risks of gifting lottery tickets to children
  • Raise awareness about youth gambling dangers
  • Promote responsible gambling practices for legal-age participants

Campaign activities include:

  • Public service announcements
  • Social media messaging
  • Digital advertising
  • In-store signage
  • Retailer training

For the seventh straight year, 100% of eligible U.S. and Canadian lotteries have joined the campaign, alongside 19 international lotteries and numerous community organizations. The initiative has received endorsements from major lottery associations worldwide, including the World Lottery Association and European Lotteries.

"This year's record participation demonstrates our growing commitment to preventing underage gambling," says Keith Whyte, NCPG Executive Director. "While our communities and legal gambling ages may vary globally, our message remains clear: lottery tickets are not appropriate gifts for children or teens."
