Polymarket Users Place Bets on Luigi Mangione Murder Case Outcomes
Cryptocurrency prediction market Polymarket has launched several betting markets related to Luigi Mangione, the suspect arrested for allegedly killing UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson in Manhattan last week.
According to Forbes, Mangione was found with "written admissions" about the shooting when arrested at a Pennsylvania McDonald's. The New York Times reported that police discovered a manifesto where Mangione described the killing as a "symbolic takedown" challenging what he called the company's corruption and "power games."
Current betting markets on Polymarket include:
- Mangione pleading guilty (68% probability, $13K volume)
- Manifesto release by Friday (24% probability, $58K volume)
- Authenticity of alleged YouTube channel (1% probability, $83K volume)
- Manifesto content predictions (10% odds comparing to Unabomber, $73K volume)

Polymarket, launched in 2020, allows users to bet on news events using cryptocurrency. The platform gained significant attention during the 2024 US election, handling billions in betting volume and accurately predicting Donald Trump's victory.
While the FBI recently raided CEO Shayne Coplan's apartment and seized devices (though no charges were filed), the platform maintains it prevents US-based betting through VPN detection. The CFTC has previously investigated Polymarket over concerns that prediction markets constitute gambling.
