The DOI, managing over 500 million acres of public lands and overseeing the Bureau of Indian Affairs (BIA), plays a crucial role in tribal gaming regulations. The BIA reviews and determines tribal land sovereignty status, which is essential for tribes to conduct Class I and II gaming operations.
Tribal leaders have expressed confidence in Burgum's appointment, citing his positive track record with Native American communities in North Dakota. Standing Rock Chairwoman Janet Alkire and Sisseton Wahpeton Oyate Chairman J. Garrett Renville both praised Burgum's collaborative approach and commitment to tribal relations.
While Burgum will succeed Deb Haaland, the first Native American Interior Secretary, tribal communities remain optimistic about the department's future direction under his leadership. Prediction markets currently give Burgum a 96% chance of Senate confirmation.
The Interior Department's responsibilities include:
- Managing 700 million acres of subsurface minerals
- Overseeing 1.7 billion acres of the Outer Continental Shelf
- Directing approximately 70,000 employees
- Administering an $18 billion budget for fiscal year 2025
Burgum has pledged to improve federal-tribal relations and enhance responsible resource management while maintaining environmental stewardship for the American people.
