NBA Referees Fight Back Against Sports Betting Harassment After Kerr Incident
NBA referees are experiencing increased harassment and threats from sports bettors, particularly through social media, as legal sports betting expands across the United States. The National Basketball Referees Association (NBRA) recently highlighted this growing concern.

The NBRA shared a disturbing example where a bettor sent threatening messages to an official's wife, demonstrating the personal nature of this harassment.

This issue gained additional attention following Golden State Warriors coach Steve Kerr's recent outburst about officiating after a one-point loss to the Houston Rockets. While Kerr disputed a loose ball foul call, the NBA's Last Two Minute Report later confirmed the officials made the correct decision.
The NBRA emphasizes that such public criticism from coaches and players can encourage further harassment. They're calling for recognition that referees and their families are human beings, deserving of protection from threats and abuse.
This problem parallels similar concerns raised by NCAA President Charlie Baker, who has advocated for banning player props to reduce bettor harassment. With Missouri becoming the 39th state to legalize sports betting, the NBRA stresses the need for better protections against online abuse and threats targeting officials.
The association maintains that while players and coaches also face online hatred, public statements that go beyond constructive criticism can embolden harmful behavior toward officials and their families.
