Massachusetts Unveils Mandatory Seal for Licensed Sports Betting Platforms
Licensed Massachusetts sports betting operators must now display an official Massachusetts Gaming Commission (MGC) seal of approval on their digital platforms. This new requirement helps consumers easily identify legal, regulated platforms from illegal offshore operators.
The seal requirement is part of the MGC's efforts to promote safe and regulated gaming while protecting consumers from illegal operators. All seven licensed operators in Massachusetts must implement:
- Data and financial security measures
- Know Your Customer (KYC) protocols
- Responsible gaming initiatives

Commissioner Eileen O'Brien emphasized that this seal helps users verify legitimate sportsbooks that protect personal and financial information, unlike illegal operators who may refuse to honor winning bets or expose users to data breaches.
The Massachusetts Attorney General's Office recently issued a cease-and-desist notice to Bovada, an offshore gaming company, for illegally targeting Massachusetts residents. Bovada has since added Massachusetts to its list of 15 restricted states and Washington, D.C., which includes:
- Colorado
- Connecticut
- Delaware
- Kansas
- Louisiana
- Maryland
- Massachusetts
- Michigan
- Nevada
- New Jersey
- New York
- Ohio
- Pennsylvania
- Tennessee
- Washington, D.C.
- West Virginia
The crackdown on illegal operators continues as part of Massachusetts' commitment to maintaining a safe, regulated sports betting market.
