The bill, introduced by Assemblyman Sterley S. Stanley (D-18), would prohibit sports wagering licensees from offering or accepting wagers on player-specific proposition bets for collegiate sports events. A companion bill, S3080, was introduced in the Senate by Sen. Kristin M. Corrado (R-40) and awaits committee hearing.

Key Points of the Legislation:

  • Complete ban on college player-specific proposition bets
  • Aims to reduce student-athlete harassment
  • Follows NCAA President Charlie Baker's nationwide initiative
  • Joins states like Louisiana, Ohio, Vermont, and Maryland in similar efforts

Industry Response: Brandt Iden of Fanatics Betting & Gaming warns the ban could push bettors to unregulated markets, suggesting alternative solutions to address player harassment should be considered.

The NCAA's push for nationwide prohibition stems from concerns about student-athlete protection and game integrity. While the New Jersey Division of Gaming Enforcement previously indicated they would consider a ban upon official NCAA request, this legislation may preempt that process.

Critics argue the ban may not effectively address harassment concerns while potentially driving betting activity to illegal markets. Supporters maintain it's necessary to protect student-athletes and preserve collegiate sports integrity.
