Mashpee Wampanoag Tribe to Reveal Updated Taunton Casino Plans in Early 2025
The Mashpee Wampanoag Tribe plans to announce major updates for its long-awaited First Light Resort & Casino project in Taunton, Massachusetts in early 2025. The tribe recently broke ground on a welcome center at the 321-acre sovereign site, which will showcase the casino blueprint and serve as an educational facility about tribal history.

The tribe has completed preliminary site work, including cleanup of illegal dumping, though it faces financial challenges. Currently owing Taunton over $2.35 million in back payments from a previous agreement, tribal leaders assure the city will be compensated once the casino opens.
The project's previous development partner, Genting, withdrew in 2021. The tribe, which primarily operates a 12-acre shellfish farm, will likely need to secure new financial backing to proceed with casino construction. Federal law requires tribal casinos to primarily benefit the tribe, though outside investors can share in profits.
Tribal Council Chair Brian Weeden indicated they are working with city officials on a phased development plan. The tribe's Gaming Authority CFO Jim Erenzo expressed confidence in creating new economic opportunities despite past delays.
The 3,200-member tribe has sought to build this casino for over a decade since acquiring the land in 2015 through federal trust. The upcoming 2025 announcement may reveal a new development partner to help finance and construct the resort casino.
