Broderick Scott, 48, an inmate at Elayn Hunt Correctional Center, was charged on Wednesday with gambling and unlawfully establishing accounts on social networking websites. The investigation revealed Scott used smuggled contraband to facilitate over 30,000 gambling-related transactions across multiple state prisons.
Scott has been transferred to Iberville Parish Jail following the charges. The investigation began in 2023 when LSP investigated contraband smuggling reports across several state facilities.
The LSP issued a stern warning about illegal money transfers to inmates, emphasizing that using third-party vendors or apps like Cash App to send money to prisoners is prohibited. The only legitimate way to send funds to inmates is through approved channels like JPay or methods listed on the Louisiana Department of Corrections website.
Law enforcement officials stated that inmates often deceive friends and family members into sending money under false pretenses, claiming it's for commissary purchases when it's actually used for illegal activities like purchasing drugs or contraband.
The LSP has affirmed its commitment to maintaining security in correctional facilities and will continue investigating illegal activities within state prisons, ensuring offenders are held accountable for their actions.
