Local officials and residents in Fairfax County, Northern Virginia, are strongly opposing proposals to establish a casino resort and convention center in Tysons. During a recent Board of Supervisors meeting, community leaders and residents voiced significant concerns about introducing gambling to the affluent area.

Vienna Mayor Linda Colbert explicitly opposed the project, citing numerous negative implications. The casino initiative, championed by state Sen. David Marsden (D-Fairfax), would require both legislative approval and voter support through a local referendum to proceed.

Marsden argues the casino could help offset potential property tax increases, as major corporations reduce their office space post-pandemic. According to Newmark's third quarter report, Northern Virginia experienced negative absorption of 714K square feet, indicating a concerning trend in commercial real estate occupancy.

While most residents oppose the casino, local unions have expressed support, highlighting the potential for creating thousands of construction and permanent jobs with sustainable wages. Union representative Epaminondas Mouhanis emphasized the benefits of union employment, including higher pay and pensions.

Currently, Virginia law only permits casinos in Norfolk, Bristol, Danville, Portsmouth, and Petersburg. Marsden plans to introduce legislation to include Fairfax County, specifically Tysons, as an eligible casino location. Even with legislative approval, the project would still require local voter approval through a referendum.

The debate continues as the community weighs economic benefits against potential social impacts, with most local leaders and residents currently standing firm against the casino proposal.
