Seneca Niagara Casino Employees Launch New Union Drive in Upstate NY
Workers at Seneca Niagara Resort & Casino in Niagara Falls are initiating unionization efforts with Teamsters Local 449, seeking improved working conditions and better compensation.

Vernon Lohan, a former casino employee leading the organizing efforts, cites concerns about unfair terminations and inadequate pay and benefits. The unionization process began on December 12, marking the first major organizing attempt since failed efforts in 2004 and 2005.
To succeed, organizers must gather signatures from at least 30% of the workforce. If achieved, the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) will oversee an election process. Despite being on tribal land, Seneca Gaming Corporation must comply with federal labor laws as it employs non-reservation workers.
Seneca Niagara, the largest of the tribe's three casinos, employs over 2,500 slot machines, 60 table games, and a sportsbook. The resort features a AAA Four Diamond hotel with 600+ rooms and premium amenities. Seneca Gaming Corporation employs over 5,500 full-time workers, paid $313.4 million in wages last year, and generated $1.1 billion in economic impact for upstate New York.
If successful, this unionization effort could influence similar movements at the tribe's other properties: Seneca Allegany Resort & Casino and Seneca Buffalo Creek. Currently, the tribe shares 25% of slot revenue with New York State and is negotiating new Class III gaming compact terms with Governor Kathy Hochul.
