Singapore's Gambling Regulatory Authority (GRA) has granted Resorts World Sentosa a two-year casino license extension starting February 6, 2025, shorter than the traditional three-year term due to unsatisfactory tourism performance.

Genting Singapore, a subsidiary of Malaysia's Genting Group, operates Resorts World Sentosa as one of Singapore's two integrated resort casinos. The property's tourism promotion efforts were deemed inadequate during the previous licensing period, though the operator cited significant challenges during the global pandemic.

The casino, featuring 2,400 slot machines and over 550 table games, has commenced a $5 billion expansion project. The development includes two new hotels with 700 rooms and emphasizes biophilic architecture, incorporating natural elements into the design. The expansion will create a distinctive waterfront sculpture that aims to enhance Singapore's skyline.

This development is part of a larger agreement from 2019, where both Resorts World Sentosa and Marina Bay Sands committed to invest $3.3 billion each to maintain their gambling duopoly through 2031. The investment has since increased significantly, reflecting both operators' confidence in Singapore's gaming market.

Since legalizing casino resorts in 2005 despite public opposition, Singapore has benefited from increased foreign tourism and substantial tax revenue from both properties. The GRA will continue working with various government agencies to ensure Resorts World Sentosa meets its obligations as a tourist destination.
