A 64-year-old grandmother is suing Dotty's slots parlor chain for $82 million after being shot and paralyzed during a robbery at their Troutdale, Oregon location. The lawsuit alleges the company's marketing practices misrepresented the safety of their establishments.

Gallo Crawford sustained injuries on December 20, 2023, that left her paralyzed from the waist down and confined to a wheelchair. The lawsuit targets Dotty's parent company, Oregon Restaurant Services, Inc., citing negligence and fraudulent misrepresentation.

The legal complaint focuses on Dotty's marketing strategy, which specifically targets middle-aged women through channels like "The View" and "The Ellen DeGeneres Show." The brand, established in Oregon in 1991, operates approximately 175 venues across Oregon, Nevada, and Montana.

According to the lawsuit, Dotty's failed to implement adequate security measures despite previous violent incidents at the location. Specific security deficiencies cited include:

  • Minimal staffing
  • Lack of alarm systems
  • Insufficient video monitoring
  • No bullet-proof glass near cash registers

The complaint argues that the brand name "Dotty's" was deliberately chosen to evoke feelings of security, safety, comfort, and nostalgia, particularly among their target demographic of middle-aged women.

The perpetrator of the shooting remains unidentified, and Oregon Restaurant Services has declined to comment on the pending litigation.
