A community group opposing the Wynn NYC casino project has gathered over 5,000 supporters in just five months. The group, "Protect the High Line," aims to preserve the iconic park's integrity against the proposed $12 billion Western Rail Yards development featuring a Wynn casino.

The opposition primarily centers on two key concerns:

  • Proposed towers would obstruct views of the High Line
  • Related Cos.' current plan reduces promised housing units from 3,454-5,700 (2009 agreement) to just 1,500

Alan van Capelle, executive director of Friends of the High Line, emphasizes that supporters come from across New York City, not just the immediate area. Recent polling indicates most West Side residents oppose a casino in their neighborhood.

The project does have some supporters, particularly:

  • Groups focused on helping the local homeless population through revenue generation
  • Labor organizations anticipating job creation opportunities

Related Cos. has stated that without the casino component, major development at the Western Rail Yards is unlikely to proceed. The development's fate remains uncertain as New York state has yet to award the three available downstate casino licenses.

The community group continues to advocate for development that honors the 2009 rezoning agreement while preserving the park's character and prioritizing public benefits, including affordable housing commitments.
