The largest teachers union in New York City has joined the opposition against a proposed $4 billion Caesars casino resort in Times Square. Michael Mulgrew, president of the United Federation of Teachers representing 200,000 education professionals, expressed concerns about the casino's potential impact on the Theater District.

Caesars Entertainment and SL Green plan to convert 1515 Broadway, currently home to the Minskoff Theater and various media companies, into an integrated resort casino. The location, situated at the heart of Manhattan's entertainment district, draws approximately 50 million visitors annually.

The No Times Square Casino Coalition, comprising 25 neighborhood associations and businesses, including the Broadway League and Sardi's, also opposes the project. Their primary concerns center on preserving the district's theatrical and cultural heritage.

Supporters of the casino project, including 17 labor unions such as the Actors Equity Association and American Federation of Musicians, argue that the development would boost Broadway show attendance and provide educational opportunities through millions in theater tickets for NYC students.

The proposed Times Square casino is one of several competing bids for New York's downstate gaming licenses. Other contenders include MGM Resorts, Genting, Hard Rock International, Las Vegas Sands, Mohegan, Wynn Resorts, and Bally's. The state's Gaming Facility Location Board is expected to select three winners by the end of next year.
