The New Jersey State Athletic Control Board (SACB) has implemented stricter sports betting policies for combat sports, prohibiting all participants from wagering on any combat sporting events worldwide.

The policy update affects boxers, fighters, promoters, referees, judges, timekeepers, medical personnel, trainers, and agency employees. While these individuals can still bet on non-combat sports, SACB employees must register with the New Jersey Division of Gaming Enforcement (NJDGE).

This policy revision follows the controversial Jake Paul vs. Mike Tyson boxing match, which sparked widespread speculation about potential match-fixing. The Netflix-streamed event, which earned Paul $40 million and Tyson $20 million, raised eyebrows due to its unusual dynamics and outcome.

SACB Commissioner Larry Hazzard Sr. emphasized the policy's importance: "We are safeguarding the integrity of combative sports events. By implementing these standards, we are sending a clear message that unethical behavior will not be tolerated in New Jersey's combative sports industry."

Key Policy Points:

  • Complete ban on betting on all combat sports globally
  • Mandatory reporting of suspected violations
  • Disciplinary actions include fines, license suspension, or revocation
  • Applies to all combat sports including boxing, wrestling, MMA, UFC, and kickboxing

Jake Paul has defended the legitimacy of his victory against Tyson, attributing the match's appearance to his superior boxing skills: "That's because someone is punching back. People don't recognize my power, my jab, my speed, my ability. My footwork to get out of the way, so then all of a sudden he's throwing at air."

The SACB's updated policy aims to maintain public confidence in combat sports while ensuring participant safety and event integrity.
