Local officials in Lawrence, Massachusetts have expressed strong opposition to the newly approved $160M Live! Casino project in Salem, New Hampshire, citing concerns about potential negative social impacts on their community.

The casino, planned for the former Lord & Taylor store at The Mall at Rockingham Park, will be located just 6.6 miles from Lawrence. The Lawrence City Council passed a resolution warning that the facility could lead to increased gambling addiction, poverty, and related social issues among vulnerable populations.

Key concerns raised by Lawrence officials include:

  • Targeting of low-income workers, elderly, and disabled residents
  • Risk of gambling addiction and associated problems
  • Potential increases in bankruptcy, domestic violence, and suicide rates
  • Predatory marketing practices like free bets and other incentives

The casino project, approved by Salem's Planning Board, will feature:

  • 900+ historical horse racing machines
  • 40 gaming tables
  • Sports lounge
  • Restaurants and bar
  • Potential future hotel addition

Despite opposition, many Salem residents support the development. The casino is expected to generate $31M annually for New Hampshire and approved charities while creating over 700 permanent jobs. Developers include Joe Faro, Sal Lupoli, and the Cordish Companies.

Additional concerns were raised about public safety, traffic impact, lighting, and a prior deed restriction prohibiting gambling at the location. The facility is scheduled to open next year in the space vacant since 2020.
