Las Vegas Sands has donated $15 million to the University of Nevada, Las Vegas (UNLV) to establish the Institute of Chinese Language and Culture, marking one of the company's largest recent philanthropic contributions.

The Sands Institute, approved by the Nevada System of Higher Education Board of Regents on December 5, will be located in UNLV's renovated Maryland Administrative Building. It aims to serve as a comprehensive resource for students, scholars, and community members interested in Chinese culture and language.

The institute will offer:

  • Mandarin language courses
  • Cultural programming including film screenings
  • Art exhibitions
  • Musical performances
  • Student and faculty exchange programs

Robert Goldstein, Sands Chairman and CEO, emphasized the institute's role in enhancing Chinese cultural literacy and fostering intercultural dialogue in Las Vegas.

While Sands no longer operates in Las Vegas following the $6.25 billion sale of The Venetian Resort, Palazzo, and Sands Expo and Convention Center in 2021, the company maintains a strong presence in Asia. As the world's largest casino operator by market capitalization (over $40 billion), Sands operates integrated resorts in Macau and Singapore.

The company is currently investing:

  • $8 billion in Marina Bay Sands expansion (Singapore)
  • $3.5 billion in non-gaming projects (Macau)

In the U.S., Sands is pursuing new opportunities, including:

  • A casino license bid for Nassau Coliseum on Long Island, New York
  • Potential gaming developments in Texas, supported by Dr. Miriam Adelson's recent $3.5 billion acquisition of the NBA Dallas Mavericks
