After signing a five-year, $25 million contract extension with the Golden Knights in 2020, Lehner's career took an unexpected turn. Previously known for his openness about battling bipolar disorder, PTSD, and addiction issues - for which he received the NHL's Bill Masterton Memorial Trophy in 2019 - Lehner faced new challenges when he and his wife filed for Chapter 7 bankruptcy in 2022.

Court documents revealed that Aliya Growth Fund, a creditor owed $4.8 million, secured an injunction to freeze Lehner's assets in September 2023. The creditor expressed concerns about money transfers to shell companies in Dubai and alleged $1.5 million in spending on vacations, gambling, and luxury items post-bankruptcy filing.

In a recent interview with the Las Vegas Review-Journal, Lehner defended himself against accusations of being unresponsive to lawyers, stating, "Everything is fake. No one has any idea what has happened to my family and my life." He currently faces debt obligations totaling $27.5 million.

The NHL and Players' Association have agreed that Lehner's salary won't count against the Vegas Golden Knights' salary cap. While his future in professional hockey remains uncertain, Lehner has indicated he's unsure if his playing career has concluded.
