Former intelligence officials are warning against a proposed casino in Northern Virginia, citing significant national security concerns. More than 100 ex-CIA and intelligence community members have signed a letter opposing the casino project planned for Tysons.

The proposed casino site would be approximately five air miles from CIA headquarters in Langley, Fairfax County. The intelligence veterans group, "National Security Leaders for Fairfax," argues that the casino's proximity to government facilities poses substantial risks.

Key concerns include:

  • Potential targeting by organized crime
  • Risk of foreign intelligence services exploiting the venue
  • Proximity to sensitive government and defense contractors
  • High concentration of security clearance holders in the area

The letter emphasizes that federal employees and security clearance holders can face dismissal if gambling activities cause financial distress. The National Intelligence Agency specifically cites gambling-related debt as grounds for security clearance revocation.

Senate Majority Leader Scott Surovell (D-Mount Vernon) is leading legislation to allow Fairfax County voters to decide on the casino project. While local leaders largely oppose the development, unions have shown support, citing potential economic benefits.

The region hosts offices of major defense contractors including:

  • Boeing
  • Lockheed Martin
  • Northrop Grumman
  • Raytheon
  • BAE
  • Booz Allen

Supporters argue the casino could provide new tax revenue streams, particularly important given the area's declining property tax base and increased office vacancies post-pandemic.

Despite similar concerns, MGM National Harbor has operated across the Potomac River since December 2016 without reported significant security incidents involving federal workers.
