Bally's proposed casino in the Bronx has sparked mixed reactions from local residents, with opinions divided between economic benefits and community concerns.

The casino operator's SVP Christopher Jewett argues that since Bronx residents already engage in gambling, a local venue would keep tax revenue within the community. The project promises 3,500 new jobs and significant economic development for the area.

However, some residents express concerns about potential negative impacts, with one local calling it a "destabilizing influence on a neighborhood."

To proceed with the casino plan, Bally's must clear several regulatory hurdles:

  • Remove the parkland designation from Trump Golf Links (now Bally Links), which they acquired for $60 million
  • Secure political support for legislation to change the land designation
  • Address land use issues before submitting casino license applications

The company plans to build the casino hotel on the current clubhouse and parking lot area if approved. However, competition for the downstate casino licenses is intense, with only three permits available. Industry experts suggest MGM's Empire City Casino and Resorts World New York may secure two of these licenses, leaving just one remaining opportunity.

While Bally's proposal remains viable, the licensing process is expected to conclude by late 2025 or early 2026, with no guarantees of success. The final decision will rest with state regulators who will evaluate all proposals based on their merits and community impact.
